Dental extractions, dental implants, and jaw reconstructive surgery are all examples of procedures performed during oral surgery. Depending on the procedure done, a recovery period can last a term of a few days to a week or more. Following oral surgery, a person can feel pain and discomfort in addition to being disoriented from anesthesia. Recovery time should be used to rest so the body can use its energy to heal itself. For this reason, it’s important to prepare for oral surgery. Use the following guidelines for this task.
After Oral Surgery, you may need someone to watch over you for a few nights. If you have small children, you will need a friend or family member to care for them until you are able to resume your normal daily routine. Also, arrange for someone to take you to and from your surgery. Even if the effects of anesthesia wear off, you may feel pain which can distract you during driving. This person ideally should stay in the office until the oral surgery is finished. The oral surgeon may need to relay information you won’t remember later.
A few days before your surgery, go grocery shopping. You will probably not feel like doing this right after surgery. The person caring for you will need to concentrate on looking after you instead of getting food. Sucking, slurping, and hard chewing can negatively influence the treated areas of your mouth. Certain movements can cause a wound to open up again. Buy nutritious foods that will help your body heal itself. Your dietary intake should consist of soft, nutritious foods and liquids such as bananas, berries, squash, and yogurt. You can make smoothies or malts during this time of recovery.
You will need to fix your recovery area prior to oral surgery. Set up the place where you will sit or lie most of the time. Ensure that you have your pillows and blankets in this place so you won’t have to search for them later. It’s a good idea to have books and magazines available so you will have literature to read within hand’s reach.
The goal of preparing for oral surgery is to get your home ready for the recovery period. Post-surgery time should be used for rest and relaxation. For further information, please contact Robert Hankel D.D.S. & Chris Ehrbright D.D.S. Or click here.
